Tell the Canadian Government

Help make a global difference by being aware of what your government is doing related to HIV/AIDS issues. Let officials know how you feel, and urge them to become more involved. Funding by Canada and other wealthy governments is vital to stopping the global HIV/AIDS tragedy.

Let the Prime Minister and your Member of Parliament know you support an annual Canadian contribution of at least $100 million per year to address global AIDS. Let them know that they should keep their promise of supporting the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Sample letter:

Dear [fill in blank]

I have recently spent some time learning more about HIV/AIDS and the effects that the disease is having on individuals and countries around the world. [Feel free to add specific examples here in which you have a personal interest.] We must work together with other governments and other non-governmental organizations around the world to stop the spread of this disease NOW!

In 1969, the Canadian government committed to the modest goal of giving 0.7% of it's Gross National Income to fighting poverty in the poorest nations of the world. Five countries - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and the Netherlands - have met this target. Six more have committed to doing so by 2015. Currently, we're only giving 0.34% of our GNI to official development assistance and have no definite plan to increase it to 0.7% despite current budget surpluses.

What will it take for this government to stand up in the fight against HIV/AIDS? - a fight in which currently 8,000 people die each day of a preventable disease.

HIV/AIDS is not just the problem of Africa or Asia, or other regions. It is everyone's problem, including ours. [Feel free to share some personal thoughts here. Specifically share anything you and your friends have done to address the global AIDS issue - e.g. holding an event to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, raising money, etc.] I hope that the Canadian government will realise the magntitute of this problem and join me in doing something about it.

Sincerely

[Your name]
